David Swanson

Dave SwansonDavid Swanson currently is the Director of the Digital Forensic Investigations (DFI) Team at MassMutual Financial Group.  The DFI team is part of MassMutual's Enterprise Information Risk Management Organization and is responsible for the conduct of digital and computer investigations in support of the Human Resources, Legal, Audit, and Compliance departments at MassMutual.  The DFI team also participates as a member of MassMutual's Litigation Virtual Team and is responsible for maintaining relations with Law Enforcement Organizations pertaining to matters of digital forensics and investigations.

Prior to his employment at MassMutual David has held various management and technical positions with ESPN, Cigna Healthcare, MCI and other firms in the fields of Information Security, Data and Voice Network design and Project Management.  David holds the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy and has served in both the active and reserve components since 1986 specializing in the fields of communications and electronic intelligence, electronic warfare and information operations.  He currently serves as the Executive Officer of a reserve unit that is a component of the Navy’s Network Warfare Command (NETWARCOM) headquartered in Norfolk, VA. 

David is a graduate of the State University of New York Institute of Technology with a B.S. degree in Telecommunications and a minor in Business Administration.  He is also a graduate of the United States Naval War College's Command and Staff Program and holds both the Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP) and SANS GIAC Certified Forensic Analyst (GCFA) certifications.

 ·  Manager wants to look at people that have at least some of the skills required.  However, the person must have Enterprise tool experience (not stand alone.)  Manager said DLP could be learned if they have the other experience.  If someone has done work in the forensics skills or has a lot of DLP work, they could probably pick up the other. 

 ·  There is no minimum # of years of experience required.

 Required skills

 · DLP- data loss prevention- making sure the member information stays in house.  Tools used are Vendor: Semantic/ Vontu, Tool:  DLP (data loss prevention) on the network level.  On the work station the Vendor is: Verdasys and tool is named: Digital guardian.   Experience is needed with either one of these.

 · Any investigations background.  “Company” does a lot of the electronic investigations.  Guidance software: Encase Enterprise (not stand alone.)   The other product Accessdata (vendor) and the tool is called: FTK – Enterprise Forensic tool kit.  Both are used at “company”.  Must have experience with one or the other.

 · Litigation support: Electronic discovery. Use the tools above to support legal data collections.

 Certifications: Forensics (ENCE, etc.), SANS, or CISSP desired but not required

 Duties

 · Participate in incident response activities; detecting and responding to a wide variety of security events, including malicious code, unauthorized access, and inappropriate usage.

 ·  Responds to requests for investigations in support of Audit, HR, or Privacy Office. Provide forensic analysis.

 · Utilize various security tools to monitor security risks in the “company” internal network. Create case and initiate investigation where warranted.

 · Manage the work requests for data retention/collection in support of corporate litigation efforts.

 · Provide responses, support and direction for all questions or requests for assistance submitted through the work intake queue, team mailbox or hotline.

 · Participate in the development and regular updating of procedures and requirements for security incident response based on technology risks and business requirements
